Heartburn occurs when acid or other stomach contents back up in the esophagus. Occasional heartburn is common and no cause for alarm. It’s not just about the food you eat. How and when you exercise and what you take to relieve your aches and pains may also cause that burning feeling.
Food, beverage, and habits all contribute to heartburn. Allow at least three hours between eating dinner and retiring to bed.
Acid Reflux is caused when a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close completely, allowing stomach acid to seep into the esophagus.
The presence of the following symptoms are enough for a doctor to diagnose heartburn; however, if needed, your doctor may perform special tests to monitor your treatment or to determine the severity of your problem.
Although you may not always be able to prevent heartburn, there are things you can do to lower your chances of triggering it.
Maintain a healthy weight. Excess abdominal fat may put pressure on the stomach and cause acid to back up into your esophagus.
Eat small and well. Avoid overeating by eating smaller meals and know the triggers of your heartburn; for example, fatty foods, alcohol, or caffeine.
Wear loose-fitting clothes. Clothes that fit tightly around your waist put pressure on your abdomen and the LES.
Quit smoking. Smoking decreases the LES’s ability to function properly.
The position of your body. Lying down or bending over, especially before your meal is fully digested, can lead to heartburn. Wait at least three hours after eating.
